--- Recount of my trip to Macau ---
Last Monday, I went to Macau with my mum. It was an enjoyable and impressing trip and I learned something from it.
I remember that it was sunny when we managed to cross the border, where there were only a few people queuing. Our trip commenced happily and relaxingly.
As soon as we passed the Porto do Cerco, a fleet of hotel buses were waiting for their guests in the station, and the service was free, on which I casted a passing glance at the old blocks in the macau peninsula.
The bus ran through narrow streets and passageways between or behind numerous city buildings and sotto portico. The shops were of primitive simplicity, using Chinese-Portuguese bilingual signs, which made me feel as if I was in the colonial era. The pedestrians walked in dolce far niente, from whom I appreciate their attitude and special understandings to life.
The bus arrived the hotel we would stay at for the following two nights. Unlike my stereotype of typical Macanese hotels, the Ponte 16 was more like a French chateau rather than a modern luxury, architecturally. An important reason was that it was located in the vicinity of the historic centre of Macau, famously known as one of the world cultural heritage.
I enjoyed the hotel very much, not only for its five-star service, but its interior décor and background light music. The walls were ornately carved as well as the moderate lighting made all the guests and visitors feel warm, decorative painting were chosen carefully, constructing an artistic temperament throughout the corridors.
Then it was dinner time, the receptionist bonjoured me elegantly and led us to the table. The café was just next to the swimming pool, where the sunlight of the dusk gently reflected on the water surface, forming a sweet and unearthly image, along with the European style decoration and the bay of distance. It also reminded me of cape sagres, the southwestern tip of Portugal and Eurasian continent.
In the evening, we visited the Avenue of Almeida Ribeiro, the main street of the old city of macau, and some of its neighboring blocks.
Firstly we entered the Grand Lisbon hotel, run by Stanley Ho’s enterprise. It had fancy and imaginative exterior design and paid particular attention on the fengshui. In addition, it exhibited lots of gold, silver and ivory carving, which even attracted a lot of non-guests going there. You could even see the horse head that was stolen by Anglo-French invaders from the old summer palace in 1860, bought back by Stanley Ho in 2007 by 7000 Hkd. I thought he is a businessman of patriotism who’d made great contribution not only to Macau, but to the whole Chinese world.
We got up very early the next the next day, to wander through the Macanese markets and shops. The weather was so hot and humid that I wasn’t willing to walk for longer hours. In spite of this, it was a fun-filled sightseeing.
The old commercial streets were featured by the mortgage stores, where those who ran out of their money on gambling to mortgage their valuable belongings. Seeing a lot of gamblers giving their jewels to the stores with an unwilling face, I thought that one should never try to make fortunes in casinos. Gambling was, and only was, for fun.
The jewelry stores and pharmacies were also worth taking a look. The gold and silver were skillfully and perfectly carved. The storefront was bright and well-decorated. In the drugstores, I truly realized that some medicines and commodities that you’d never seen in mainland did exist in the same country, which had special aromas and touches.
In the afternoon we went on a bus trip to several famous hotels. First destination was the City of Dreams, where there were some hi-tech 3d shows. We enjoyed one of them, which was dragon-themed. At the end, there were even virtual coins dropping on the ground.
Later on, we also visited the Venetians and the Galaxy, whose decorations were both fastidious, where you might feel like being in a city, with shops, cinemas, cafés, souvenirs inside the fabulous and imaginative palaces.
In the evening, we saw a performance in the Wynn, which was about my favorite subject-astronomy. The zodiacal constellations shook and moved on the celestial globe. Suddenly, a golden dragon jumped out, which surprised all the audiences. A hotel makes money not only by providing rooms, but recreations.
