暑假学校
谈谈小子弟暑假学校。他的学校只提供特殊孩子的暑假学习,所以正常孩子不会来学校学习。于是他们的ABA咨询师提议小子去普通私立学校。学校提供AIDE(助理)和校车。
Hi Kathy,
Here's what I am thinking and the school notes for today:
(1) Before circle time, there's a period time for free play, XX (my son’s name) really needs facilitation;
(2) Circle time, if he's not looking at teacher, try to use non-verbal way to point to the classroom teacher to let him know he needs to listen. And I think more prompt shall come from the classroom teacher. Could you please share this info with her? I think XX does not like the school aide was because she prompted too much in the circle time.
(3) Snack time is a great time to engage when talking about every one's food, your food and XX's food.
(4) Free play time is too long. Outdoor play needs facilitation; indoor play needs too.
Here's the activities I facilitated today.
(1) Play train: XX and Alexis were together. Tried to broke him to play alone. So I made a team for the trains. Alexis would like to add one engine into the team, then the train team was longer. This raised XX's interest, so he put one more Thomas there. And then he broke the road, we drove to the broken piece and pretend not be able to cross the big gap, and Alexis said that we shall fix it. Then XX fixed it. Also I tried something to make the train backward moving (silly stuff), and bumped XX's engine; Or if XX's engine was inside of the tunnel, I will say "it's too dark, it's scared." etc.. Then later, Alexis brought a giraffe (the animal) on the railway track, we said “Oooops, the giraffe is staying on the railway track, the engine is coming, safe? etc... " So there are many silly ways to engage with him on the railway track, but you can see he is easy to get absorbed in the train track. In this case, it did need you to have some good ideas and affect to make him go along with you.
(2) Outdoor hula hoop tunnel: Although they only had 3 hula hoops , we made them as a tunnel, so everyone can get through. This one you can ask some kids to be the tunnel helper and they play alternatively. The trick is to make the tunnel to be changed, for example, first couple of time the tunnel was at same level; Then after a while, one of the hula hoop will be higher to challenge kids. Or you can add more varieties to make two hula hoops a little bit far away and put an obstacle between them. I found they all loved it. At first I can feel that XX loved this game, then after 3 rounds he lost his interest although he came back one-two times later. The reasons was: There were many many kids who wanted to join, so it took long time for him to play once; 2nd, I added in the high five too late (upside, downside (you need to have some tricks, do not let them to have high five successfully every time, let them to miss the downside high five -- they all love it) I shall add the high five earlier to increase XX's interests, also high five looks like an reinforcement for everyone here.
(3) Outdoor balance beam: When XX was on the curb(I called it balance beam), so I said XX was the line leader of the balance beam and who wanted to join the team. We can make this team as a choo--choo train and XX to be the leader. Then we saw more and more kids joined this team. When XX got to the end, I said "turn around", so XX changed to be the last one, everyone went to another direction. The last one previously became to be the line leader. I can felt that XX was a little bit proud when he was a balance beam line leader. On the balance beam, we can also add some varieties such as sing a song, or choo-choo sound, or fast /slow choo-choo, or said it becomes to cars because it get slow, etc...But this needs you to tell them to turn around, when to say choo-choo, when to be fast to be an airplane, when to be slow to be a car, etc...
(4) Outdoor jump mat(The one with numbers/pictures and let kids to jump in different mode): This one I also used the "Ready, set, go" to let everyone had a clear cut, this gave XX info processing time which he was familiar with, then started each one's jumping. Each kid can have different kinds of jump. So the variety kept and it's not the repetitive activity for them. After each jump, I also gave each kid a funny high five which attracted them a lot. Same thing for XX, he joined for 3 rounds and left because of the long lines of the kids. I guess if there are no more than 5 kids, it will be better!
(5) The last outdoor one was: hide and seek. I made the mistake and let XX to be the one to search other kids. XX's visual ability really blocked him to do that and the play ground was too big for him, so he immediately got lost and did not know what he shall do. I shall let other kids to be the one to search and help XX to hide. This one is some kinds of tough because XX's visual challenge.
(6) Indoor the paint helper: He likes to be the helper, so the more involved him, the more he's engaged. The helper can build a bridge for him to know the Friends' name because he’s a new guy to this classroom. If you let him see who is the next person to paint, point to him who is, let him to call the kids, so will give him 10 times chances to "gain the peer's attention, call the kids". This is a very good chance!!
(7) Eye gaze activity: This one can works from any toys including a lots of piece. And ask another peer to play with him. They two can practice turn-taking. You are the leader and they follow your gaze. Today that little boy did not get it. We can pick a girl instead next time, maybe more fun.
(8) Another one I am thinking is the classroom has two sets of drum, you can do in your way, and let him to copy you, more non-verbal used just like the eye gaze activity. Or using drum to do a frozen activity, when you hit the drum, they can move; when you stop to hit, then shall stop (using the red light/green light game). So the one who is still moving will be out! This needs only 5 kids to do that. The last one left is the winner and he can get something, maybe high five (silly one)...
BTW, the classroom duty job, can you please make a list for me tomorrow? I really want to talk this with XX so that he can be familiar with those as soon as possible. I want to make him to know what will happen in school so that he can be more active. Otherwise, he's too overwhelmed.
Thanks,
Kwenma
