MISSING AUTISTIC CHILD DIED MYSTERIOUSLY IN CHINA
Edited by Bin Feng, Feb 15. 2006
On Feb.7, 2006, not far away from the magnificent Terra-cotta Army of Xian, China, a horrible tragedy of a missing 7-year-old Autistic child turned this traditional Chinese Holiday season into anguish and mourning.
Zheng-Lin Li, as LingLing called fondly by her family and friends, was found dead in a deserted house. The witness also reported that there were no cloths on that little body laid bare on the frozen ground.
LingLing was a 7-year-old Autistic girl who was first reported missing on Jan.30,2006. Since her single-parent father, Mr. Dongshen Li,had to work on holidays, LingLing was taken by her kindergarten director, Ms. MeiLi Cao, to the village where Cao lives. Around 4PM, Ms.Cao let LingLing go to backyard to play by self. 5 minutes later, she discovered that little girl out of sight. Mr.Li, with help of Ms.Cao and the neighbors had been desperately searching his daughter day and night, hundreds of people were inquired, hundreds of missing-person notes had been posted. But all efforts had gained no results.
Finally, 7 days later, the fate had unveiled its ugliest face. Around 11:45AM of Feb. 6,2006, Mr.YongChun Hu, a local resident of the Shang-Ta-Po Village, went to a neighboring deserted house to pick up some heating coal, he found a little girl's body was lying on the cold floor where the coal are stocked. The astonished Hu quickly called the local police.Later, the police confirmed that little girl was indeed LingLing missing 7 days ago.
According to Mr..Hu, that defunct house has been abandon for more than 4 years, grass has been growing at waist high, the back walls also have collapsed so anyone could sneak in. Sadly, not far away on a telephone pole, there was a missing person note posted by Mr.Li. It is also less than one mile from where Ms.Cao lives. Neither her parents and friends'love and care, nor the powerful Emperor's Terra-cotta Army could save the fragile little life from her fateful tragedy.
LingLing's family has requested the local police of Chang An, a district of Xian City, to investigate the cause of LingLing's death, but the initial police report was far from acceptable by Mr.Li. The report has exclude the possibility of homicide, they concluded that LingLing died of hunger and freezing weather, and also assumed that the reason why LingLing's body had no cloths on was that some people would have elusion to keep the body temperature down by taking off clothes while dying. But that reason seems very absurd by Mr.Li, because LingLing was a severely low-functional Autistic child. She had far below normal fine motor skills, she had never been able to put on or take off clothes by herself, not mention those multi-layer winter coats and boots.
Whether due to their very scarce knowledge of Autism, or simply they don't want to take their words back, the local police department have been ignoring Mr.Li's protest. Meanwhile, Mr. YunBo Ding, the family's lawyer is also preparing further legal action against the police department of Changan District. It is also reported that the Ministry of Public Security, which is the ultimate boss of all the Chinese police departments, have intervened to re-investigate this case.
LingLing's tragedy also stirred up a huge sentimental outcry among the Chinese parents with Autistic children. There are estimated at least half a million Autistic children in China, but there is very few medical or educational resources for those children and parents. The Chinese government has not recognized Autism officially under its Disability Law and its Social Security Systems. Many of them who did not have chance to intervene in their early ages ended up to be locked up at home. Those with high functional Autism are struggling at schools, being ignored ,isolated , scolded , humiliated, and discriminated by their peers or teachers, even being kicked out from schools.
But those Chinese parents are taking unbelievable courage to fight for their children. Some of them established Autism training facilities, but the demand is so huge, that some children have to wait more than a year to get admitted into training programs, which cost great price to those Autistic children since they may lose the best ages for early intervention. Almost all those families are undertaking tremendous hardship emotionally, economically, and socially, more than people can image.
Mr.Li, himself is one of the best among them, he has been an inspiring example of love, sacrifice, and courage. When he first found his daughter had the Autism at year 2003,he gave up his career, left his home, took LingLing to try any opportunity in China that might help him to find a cure to his daughter's autism. Even LingLing was a severe Autistic child with no meaningful speech, no eye contact, no communication to anyone except her parents and close family members, merely with the intelligence level of a one-year-old even she was 7-year-old, Mr.Li always keeps an up beat attitude, never gives up any hope and reserves no spare effort to his daughter's recovery. The potty training alone took him three years to teach her. As long as LingLing awakes and be around, his father kept talking to her, no matter whether she listened or understood, this was a father's own way to keep his daughter out of the darkness. Mr.Li once recalled an unforgettable moment, "when we were in QingDao seeking treatment, one day I took her out for dinner, maybe that food was very good to her appetite, she finished quickly, then to my most surprise, she looked at me with those shining eyes, smiling, and called me 'Daddy'! At that moment, I could hardly hold up my tears, this was the first time she ever spoke to me initiatively ! That night, I placed a long distance call to my wife in Changsa, told her that miracle, both of us were laughing and crying on the phone like babies. "
Those who once know LingLing and his father remembered with sweet sadness that speechless little girl dressed up beautifully by her loving father, now while that little soul rests peacefully in God's hands, leaving his distraught parents still fighting for justice. Thousands of Chinese parents with Autistic children are behind of them, not only for the sake of LingLing, but also for the social awareness of hundreds of thousands of Autistic children in China.
