Abstract. This paper reviews the evidence that autism is a disorder of complex information processing with intact simple information processing. This constellation explains why these particular symptoms travel together as a syndrome, the failure of intact skills to predict higher order skills, and the common “co-occurrence” of mental retardation with autism. Complex information processing does not refer to a particular ability, but is a concept that identifies a common characteristic shared by all deficits. This concept is important because it highlights the fundamental importance to educational and behavioral treatment of simplifying tasks to reduce information processing demands. It also is equally applicable in characterizing structural and functional abnormalities of the brain, aiding in making links across levels from genes to behavior.
The neural basis of this cognitive profile was investigated in eye movement studies, which demonstrated that deficits are the result of the selective failure of the most advanced levels of brain circuitry to develop.
