RDR has rapidly become a basic principle of the RDI Program, since it was introduced almost a year ago. Developmental psychologists have found the first parent-child joint challenge is to establish a regulatory, safe relationship; while this occurs by the age of 3 months in neuro-typical (NT) infants, what we have found is that this has often been one of the critical missing developmental steps for those on the autism spectrum. Like the other "meta-functions," RDR is part of every Stage of the RDI Program, starting very simply, with each step becoming a building block for the next. With RDR, for example, this would mean solidly establishing Regulation before introducing any Dys-regulation.
